What is matcha and what makes it special?
Matcha is a traditional Japanese green tea made from tea leaves that are shaded before harvesting, gently steamed and then ground into a fine, bright green powder using stone mills. Unlike regular tea, where only the infusion is enjoyed, matcha is prepared with the whole finely ground leaf. It naturally contains L-theanine and caffeine, making it a popular green alternative for those who prefer not to drink coffee.
What do you need to make matcha latte at home?
A good homemade matcha latte only needs a few essentials: high-quality matcha powder, hot water that is no longer boiling, your preferred milk or plant-based drink, and the right accessories. To prepare it in the traditional way, you will need a suitable bowl and a fine bamboo whisk. For quicker everyday preparation, modern kitchen helpers, such as an electric milk frother also work well.
What is the difference between ceremonial grade and culinary grade matcha?
Matcha powder is available in different quality grades. Ceremonial grade is made from the youngest leaves of the first harvest. It has a very mild taste, minimal bitterness and an intense jade-green colour, making it ideal for drinking pure with water. Culinary grade usually comes from later harvests and has a stronger, more pronounced flavour. It is particularly well-suited to matcha latte and baking, as its fine tea aroma holds its own well alongside milk or plant-based drinks.
Why does matcha latte taste so creamy in cafés?
The secret lies in the right water temperature and well-frothed milk. Water that is too hot, above 80°C, can make the delicate tea powder taste bitter. When the matcha is dissolved smoothly at the right temperature and combined with warm, velvety barista-style milk or a plant-based alternative, the natural creaminess helps balance its slightly tart notes. A little natural sweetener gives the drink a café-style finish.
