Which plant-based milk alternative works best in a matcha latte?
It depends on personal taste, but a few options are especially popular with matcha fans:
- Oat drink, barista edition: A favourite for good reason. Its gentle natural sweetness balances the slightly tart notes of matcha without overpowering the tea’s own flavour.
- Almond drink: Adds a delicate nutty note that pairs particularly well with stronger matcha varieties. It is usually a little less sweet.
- Soy drink: A classic choice for a neutral flavour and a creamy texture that comes closest to dairy milk.
Why choose a barista edition?
Barista-style plant-based drinks are developed specifically for hot drinks. They usually contain a slightly higher proportion of plant fats and often a touch of protein or stabilisers. This helps prevent curdling when combined with hot matcha and makes it easier to create a stable, fine and velvety foam. Standard plant-based drinks can be more watery, causing the foam to collapse quickly.
Can dairy milk be used to make matcha latte?
Of course. For those who prefer traditional dairy milk, whole milk is the best choice, ideally with 3.5% fat. Fat carries flavour and helps the complex notes of matcha taste rounder and creamier. Chilled whole milk also froths beautifully thanks to its natural protein content.
How hot should the milk be for a matcha latte?
As with the water, too much heat can affect the flavour. The ideal temperature for frothed milk or plant-based drinks is between 60 °C and 65 °C. If the milk gets too hot, the proteins change and the foam becomes less stable. Dairy milk can also develop a stronger cooked taste at higher temperatures, which may overpower the fresh, grassy aroma of matcha.
